Bestway gets top rankings in Britain's private companies league

The Sunday Times Deloitte Top Track 100 league table of Britain's top private companies has placed the Bestway Group at 17th position for the second year running.

The paper rates the top 100 companies in the UK and is the eight annual league table, compiled by Fast Track. Bestway keeps good company in the list with John Lewis Partnership at 4, Palmer and Harvey at 5  and Brakes Group at 14. Companies with household names that are placed behind Bestway in the league table, include  Sir Robert McAlpine (21), EMI(24), Clarks Shoes (33) and Findus Foods(36).

In its editorial about the group, the newspaper said, "Sir Anwar Pervez founded Bestway as a single grocery store in1963. Since then Bestway Group has grown to become one of Britain's largest cash-and-carry operators, helped by its acquisition of rival Batley's in 2005. The group's other interests include the milling of food staples, cement factories in Pakistan that produce more than 5m tonnes of cement a year, and a 31%stake in Pakistan's third -biggest bank. The group's sales reached £1.895m in 2008, including a £344m contribution from the associated grocery wholesale business, Bestway Northern."
