Best-one launches Online Training for Retailers

Best-one has launched a low cost online training programme for independent retailers and their staff to help boost customer service and meet legal and regulatory standards.

The symbol group has partnered with online training provider Upskill People to offer the ‘C-Store Essentials’ package.  Courses for all staff cover 10 modules in key areas including ‘Personal Essentials’, ‘Fire Safety Essentials’, ‘Legal Issues’, and ‘Think 25 Restricted Products’.

Managers can undertake an additional three modules including a ‘Personal Licence Holder Briefing’.  There are also courses specifically designed for those operating post offices or forecourts.  All are fully accredited and conducted online in the retailer’s own time or in-store to reduce cost.

Stores with up to 10 staff pay £200 to allow ALL employees to undertake ALL courses.  Those with 11 staff or more pay an additional flat rate of £75.  Employees receive certificates on passing each module which can be used to prove due diligence if needed.

The initiative is the latest borne out of the Best-one Ambassadors, a VIP panel of independents formed to help steer the future direction and strategy of the symbol group.  The announcement follows the unveiling of plans for a premium store concept, ‘Best-one +’, for a top tier of progressive retailers.

James Hall, Group Director of Symbol at Bestway, says: “Training is a business impetrative.  Not only does it motivate staff, it gives them the knowledge and skills to deliver the upmost customer service – which is one of the top three reasons why shoppers choose their convenience store.  Retailers also have a responsibility to ensure they are meeting the required legal and regulatory standards.”

Retailers unable to prove due diligence in training staff in breach of regulations face fines of thousands of pounds and, in extreme cases, losing their business and even time behind bars.
