Oban is one of Scotland's oldest and smallest distilleries. It was founded in 1794 and the West Highland port town of the same name has grown around the distillery. It is the one Single Malt Scotch Whisky in which the rich, complex flavours of the Highlands meet and mingle with the peaty, maritime character of the Islands. Balancing autumn fruits and sea air, Oban whisky owes its rich and rewarding Highland character to its very long fermentation process. The tiny lamp glass-shaped copper pot stills that make Oban's Scotch are among the smallest in Scotland, and the liquor they distil is slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs outside among the rooftops, exposed to the salted sea air, bringing a distinct depth of flavour said to go very well with salted caramel. Oban 14 Year Old is a superb combination of rich sweetness and smoky dryness with fruity notes of oranges, pears and dried figs, plus hints of sea-salt and peat smoke notes. It works well as an accompaniment to seafood like oysters or smoked salmon, giving them new depths of flavour.
"Little Bay of Caves"
Along the shores of lorn lies a record of man far more ancient than that of any city in the land. The first settlers arrived on the mainland in 5,000 BC and sheltered in the natural caves of the land then known as 'an OB'. The 'Distillery Cave' was one such shelter hidden in the Creag A' Bharrain Cliffs which rise dramatically above the 'Oban Distillery'.
Producers of a delicate single malt West Highland malt scotch whisky.
The distillery is at the heart of Oban - "Gateway to the Isles". In effect, the town grew up around the distillery, founded by John and Hugh Stevenson in 1794.
Oban's attractive West Highland character reflects its location, revealing aspects of both the Highland and the Island styles.
The stills here are among the smallest in Scotland. The cramped nature of the site places severe limits on production, which in turn means that demand for Oban's richly appreciated malt is always likely to exceed supply.
Few malts were ever made in the Western Highlands and only two now remain. Oban, like its home, remains their capital.
Oban is the unforgettable West Highland destination on a journey around Scotland's six malt whisky making regions. The other Classic Malts are:
