VS - Martell 'Very Special' cognac was created over 150 years ago and is still enjoyed all over the world today.
Its harmonious, finely balanced blend with fresh notes of citrus, pear and saffron, make it the ideal cognac to enjoy with friends in a long drink, with dry ginger and a wedge of lemon, or over ice.
VSOP - Martell 'Very Superior Old Pale' Médaillon bears a gold medallion engraved with the portrait of Louis XIV. This commemorates the year 1715, which saw the end of the Sun Kings's reign and the birth of the House of Martell.
This cognac is made with skillfully blended, mature aux-de-vie from the four finest growths of the Cognac region. The mature cognacs within VSOP offer notes of raisin, plum and fig that make this cognac ideal for sipping after-dinner.
XO - With its distinctive arch-shaped bottle. Martell XO is a powerful symbol of inspiration, testimony to lean Martells' visionary spirit.
Combining the elegance of the Borderies with the power of the Grande Champagne region. Martell is an outstanding XO which bears the hallmarks of the Martell style. Ideal to mark special occasions and after special meals, best enjoyed neat or over ice.
Martell Cognac, the oldest of the major cognac houses, has pioneered the art of creating great cognac since 1715. Founder by the visionary Jean Martell, the house of Martell has become world-renowned for producing fine, well-balanced cognac with a light, fruity and floral style. For nearly 300 years, Martell has ensured that only the finest growth regions, wines and barrels are used in the production of their famous cognac.
Cognac Region - Set in the beautiful French countryside, the Cognac region is divided into six regions depending on the soil type which imparts different flavours to the delicate white grapes. Martell's cognacs are produced from only the four most prestigious regions, or 'cru' - Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Fin Bois, and the legendary 'Borderies'. The Borderies is the smallest and most exclusive Cognac region, that delivers a unique fruity and nutty taste to the final cognac. Even today, Martell is the only cognac house to use Borderies in every grade of cognac, including VS, VSOP and XO.
Barrel Ageing - Martell has always insisted upon using only rare fine-grain oak barrels to produce their cognac. This liner grain of the Martell barrels helps to deliver a smoother style of cognac with light oak aromas and natural hints of vanilla. Martell Cognac is rested in such fine-grain oak barrels for a number of years, and stored in ancient cellars near the Martell Chateau; all under the watchful eye of the Cellar Master. Only when the Cellar Master agrees that the cognac is suitably aged, will the cognac be blended to create such fine styles as Martell VS, VSOP and XO.
Our cognac is made from just the clear wine, not the heavy lees or sediments of the grapes. This wine is then distilled twice in copper pot stills to create an eaux-de-vie. We then age this in French oak barrels for many years to develop complex aromas and colours. We insist on a unique type of fine grained oak barrel called ‘Tronçais', which allows the eaux-de-vie to extract light, soft and subtle tannins from the wood. This creates an aromatic and complex cognac with a hint of vanilla. The Martell cellar master then carefully selects and blends eaux-de-vie from different vintages to create our cognacs.
